Makahiki Festival

Makahiki was a traditional Hawaiian festival, celebrated during the four months of winter. The people stopped work, made offerings to the king, and practiced sports, feasting and dancing. War during the time Makahiki was forbidden. Click here for more in-depth information and links.

In recent years, Makahiki has been revived on the North Shore of O'ahu and in many other places in the Islands. Here are some images of a local hula halau as they celebrated Makahiki in the sacred gardens of Waimea Valley in 2004.
